Getting started as an electrician: 7 Useful Tips!

If you are considering a future as an electrician our 7 top tips for getting started as a domestic electrician can help.

  1. Get qualified – You will require industry recognised qualifications to show that you are competent to undertake electrical installations.
  2. Get tooled up – When you have the necessary qualifications it is important to get the right tools for the job. One of the most important pieces of equipment is a multifunction tester. We strongly recommend the manufacturer Kewtech as we have found them to be reliable, robust and cost effective. As far as hand tools are concerned we would recommend CK Tools as we have found them to be very durable and extremely good value.
  3. Get accredited – If you want to sign off your own electrical work that is notifiable under building regulations then you will need to join a government approved Part P scheme provider, for example NICEIC or NAPIT.
  4. Get covered – Make sure that you don’t incur any unwanted costs and insure yourself for Public liability. Public liability will insure you against any mistakes that you could make that causes either injury to your customer or damage to a customer’s property.
  5. Get yourself out there – When starting out it is important that you make the right impression with your clients. Ensure that you are always punctual, reliable, polite, tidy and professional. Word of mouth is without doubt the best way of getting new customers – Tradespersons register Checkatrade found that 67% of homeowners rely on this when hiring tradespeople, and only 15% of people would look through a local directory.
  6. Get recommended – With the exception of price and workmanship, 61% of people value tidiness as the most important point when recommending a tradesperson as found via a survey conducted by Checkatrade.
  7. Get working – Tradespeople have the ability to work for themselves. By being your own boss, you have the power to set how many hours per week you want to work.
